The 4 Chaplains were four United States Army chaplains who gave their lives up to save other military and civilian personnel on their ship, the SS Dorchester, which sank during WWII on February 3, 1943.  They gave up their own life jackets to others as there weren’t enough jackets for everyone.  The 4 Chaplains, George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington, linked arms, said prayers and sang hymns, as they went down with the ship that day.

American Legion posts nationwide are encouraged to commemorate the anniversary each February to mark the anniversary of the legendary acts of selflessness of the four Army chaplains who were aboard.  Members of the local American Legion post and other veterans join us and help in the service.
